What is CBD oil?

CBD oil or cannabidiol oil is a substance derived from the hemp or cannabis plant containing high amounts of the cannabinoid cannabidiol.

Most CBD oils have an exceptionally low percentage of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana strains. CBD in certain require industrial hemp to contain 0.3 percent or less of THC on a dry weight basis, a nearly negligible amount.

In order to extract CBD oil from the cannabis plant, producers need to isolate the CBD from the THC to ensure that the oil will not be psychoactive.

What does CBD oil do?

To answer this, we need to take a step back to address the endocannabinoid system, a system within the body whose receptors (CB1 and CB2) have an enormous impact on our health and well-being.

CB1 receptors in the brain are associated with emotions, mood, appetite, coordination, movement, and pain, CB2 receptors are found in the immune system and throughout tissues in many organs.

The endocannabinoid system is a relatively new discovery and cannabinoids are the compounds that activate this system, and the many beneficial characteristics of the cannabinoids like THC or CBD could help improve endocannabinoid function.

While CBD oil’s benefits are still being tested, some studies connect CBD oil to reducing the symptoms of epilepsyneuropathic and multiple sclerosis-related pain, and cancer. Many people also state that CBD helps with anxiety.

How do I take CBD and at what dosage?

Before adding CBD oil to your regimen, as with any supplement, be sure to check with your doctor to make sure that it is a good choice for you. This is especially true if you are taking certain anti-seizure medications.

CBD oil can be consumed in many different forms: tincture, oil vaping, capsule, sublingual, or even topicals. When taking CBD, always follow the instructions on the package of the product.

Can you get high from CBD oil?

No. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid that makes you high; CBD does not have any psychoactive properties. While many CBD oils, particularly full-spectrum products, contain trace amounts of THC, it is not enough to make you high.

If you are at a risk for random drug tests, for example through your job, you may wish to choose a CBD oil that is entirely devoid of THC.

Are there side effects from taking CBD oil?

CBD oil is generally considered to be safe for most people, and few people experience side effects. There is literature review and some patients have noted that CBD oil can have the following side effects in some cases:

  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes to appetite
  • Changes to weight
Where can good CBD oil be made?

Production of CBD oil is not the same all over the world – or even all over the country – due to regulations and legislative hurdles with regards to the industrial hemp that is needed to produce full-spectrum CBD oil.

What is the difference in isolate CBD oil and whole plant/full spectrum CBD oil?

“Full spectrum” or “whole plant” CBD oil will contain trace amounts of THC as well as other cannabinoids. This contributes to the much-touted “entourage effect,” that allows patients to reap the benefits of not only the hundreds of cannabinoids but also the flavonoids and terpenes present in the plant.

Isolate CBD oils are made by isolating only the CBD present in the plant; THC and other cannabinoids will not be present in these oils.

What is the difference between CBD oil and 100% hemp oil?

Hemp oil is the name given any oil derived from the hemp plant; CBD oil is an oil containing high amounts of CBD, made from either the hemp or the cannabis plant. While much CBD oil is also hemp oil, not all hemp oil is CBD oil; hemp oil made from the seeds of the hemp plant will not contain active CBD.

What should I look for when choosing a CBD oil? Which CBD products/companies I should avoid?

To make sure that you are receiving only the best CBD oil, choose products that have been tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and other impurities.

Also be sure you are choosing CBD oils extracted with CO2 rather than butane, and do not be afraid to ask for lab tests from the company if they are not already prominently displayed on the company website: any company producing its CBD oil properly will be happy to provide this information.

Many companies will even do batch testing, so you can see the results from the exact batch of CBD oil you have purchased.

What Are Cannabinoids?
You probably already know how marijuana affects you, but do you ever wonder how a single plant can produce so many different effects? From an enjoyable high to being able to treat various medical conditions, many of marijuana’s best qualities are due to cannabinoids. The medical marijuana plant creates various compounds naturally, and each has its own potential side effects and specific benefits.

Research is ongoing and continues to show promise of potential further medical benefits from a variety of compounds. Getting an understanding of the various types of cannabinoids and how they affect you will provide you with more insight on the plant and its therapeutic benefits for medical conditions.

Does CBD oil work?

Clinical trials are still confirming the efficacy of CBD oil, but many patients have already noted that it has a positive effect on their health and well-being.

How many types of cannabis strains are there?
There are more than 18,000 cannabis strains in the world. And you can expect many more to come in upcoming years. They are classified into Indica strains, Sativa strains, Ruderalis strains, and Hybrid strains (Crossbreed between Indica, Sativa, or Ruderalis). Further, they can be labeled as Regular, Feminized, and Auto-flowering strains.
What is the difference between THC and CBD?

The two major cannabinoids in cannabis that have been studied are:

  • THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), is thought to be the most psychoactive substance (i.e., a substance that changes brain function and alters perception, mood, consciousness or behavior) in cannabis. The concentration of THC in cannabis varies between 1% and 24%.
  • CBD (cannabidiol) is the major non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. The concentration of CBD in cannabis is typically less than 1%, but many strains have higher CBD concentrations.
What determines how marijuana effects a person?

Like any other drug, marijuana’s effects on a person depends on several factors, including the person’s previous experience with the drug or other drugs, biology (e.g., genes), gender, how the drug is taken, and how strong it is.

Is it possible to “overdose” or have a “bad reaction” to marijuana?

A fatal overdose is unlikely, according to research. Medicinal marijuana requires the patient to follow your physician’s directions. Standard prescribing follows a rule of thumb to “start low and go slow”.  Any signs of a bad reaction include confusion, anxiety, paranoia, panic, fast heart rate, delusions or hallucinations, increased blood pressure, and severe nausea which are prevented by strictly following physician’s directions and hydrate as directed.

Is it safe for a breastfeeding mom to use marijuana?

Chemicals from marijuana can be passed to your baby through breast milk. THC is stored in fat and is slowly released over time, meaning that your baby could still be exposed even after you stop using marijuana for a short period of time estimated at about 30 days. However, data on the effects of marijuana exposure to the infant or baby through breastfeeding are limited and conflicting. To limit potential risk to the infant, breastfeeding mothers should avoid marijuana.

What Are the Side Effects of Medical Marijuana?

Regardless of whether people use it for its euphoric or therapeutic properties, it has the potential of producing a variety of psychological and physical side effects. Not all people experience the same effects. The reactions often depend on what type of marijuana you consume and the way you consume it. Some side effects occur such as dry mouth, cough with inhalation methods, and “uncomfortable” feeling which is easily corrected with plenty of hydration.

Marijuana’s main effect familiar to most population is its “euphoric high” which is a psychoactive response to the THC in it. The cannabinoid THC gets into your bloodstream, eventually interacting with your brain cell receptors. If you don’t want this euphoric side effect, you can find strains low in THC and high in CBD.
